That's what the pbmplus utilities are for -- converting from p[bgp]m to 
other formats.  To convert to GIF, use "qcam | ppmtogif", nice and 
simple.  The utilites for JPEG are packaged seperately, but they work 
the same.  They're on sunsite if you need them.
